The basics

What Is a Life Settlement?

A life settlement generally involves the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a third-party buyer for a cash payment. The buyer becomes the policy owner and beneficiary, generally assumes responsibility for future premiums, and receives the policy benefit when it becomes payable.

The payment is less than the policy's death benefit and may be greater than its cash surrender value. Availability, requirements, and results vary by state, policy, and individual circumstances.

01

The owner receives a payment

The policy owner accepts an agreed payment in exchange for transferring ownership of the policy.

02

Ownership and beneficiary rights change

The purchaser becomes the policy owner and beneficiary.

03

The purchaser generally assumes future premiums

The purchaser generally keeps the policy in force and later receives the policy benefit.

Why Understand the Available Options?

  • Coverage is no longer needed for its original purpose.
  • Premiums are becoming more difficult to maintain.
  • Family, beneficiary, estate-planning, or business needs have changed.
  • Access to funds may better support current financial priorities.

A life settlement is not right for everyone. Alternatives may include keeping or modifying coverage, accessing available policy value, surrendering the policy, or allowing it to lapse. Each path can affect costs, taxes, privacy, public benefits, future insurability, and beneficiaries differently.
